Use Basecamp with ChatGPT, Claude, and your other AI assistants

Connect Basecamp to ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, or Grok, then just ask. What happened on a project this week? What’s overdue? What did that long thread finally decide? Your assistant can add to-dos, move cards, and draft updates for you, too. And it only sees what you can see in Basecamp — nothing more.

Things you can ask

  • What happened on the Website Redesign project this week?
  • What’s overdue on my plate? List it by due date.
  • Summarize the discussion on the latest launch message and list the open questions.
  • Turn these meeting notes into to-dos in the Q4 Launch project and assign them.
  • Move any card that’s been sitting in Review for over two weeks back to In Progress.
  • Draft a Friday update for the Marketing Message Board based on what we finished this week.
  • Find the doc where we settled on new pricing and quote the decision.

Connect your assistant

The assistant will send you to Basecamp to sign in and approve access. You decide whether it can just look around, or make changes too.

ChatGPT

On chatgpt.com, open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode. Then head to Plugins, click +, name it Basecamp, and paste in the address below. If it asks how to sign in, choose OAuth. ChatGPT will send you to Basecamp to sign in and approve access. To use it, start a new chat, choose Developer mode from the + menu, and pick Basecamp.

This works on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. On Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, your workspace admin may need to turn on developer mode for you first.

Claude

On claude.ai or in the Claude desktop app, open Customize → Connectors, click +, choose Add custom connector, name it Basecamp, and paste in the address below. Then sign in to Basecamp and approve access. That’s it.

On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds Basecamp once under Organization settings → Connectors. Then everyone connects their own Basecamp account.

Cursor

Open Cursor Settings, add a new server named Basecamp, and paste in the address below. Cursor will open Basecamp so you can sign in and approve access.

Grok

Head to grok.com/connectors, click New Connector, choose Custom, and paste in the address below. It works in Grok Bot, too.

Copy and paste this address if your assistant asks for it:

https://mcp.xn--80akhigjeyrwql5c.xn--p1ai/mcp

What can AI assistants do?

Just about anything you can do in Basecamp yourself.

  • Projects: find, start, and organize projects, and see who’s on them.
  • To-dos: add to-dos, assign them, set due dates, and check them off.
  • Message Boards and comments: read threads, post updates, reply, and boost.
  • Card Tables: add cards, move them between columns, and manage steps.
  • Calendar: add events and see what’s coming up.
  • Docs & Files: read and write docs, and track down files.
  • Campfire and Pings: read your chats and post messages.
  • Automatic Check-ins: read and answer your check-ins.
  • People: reply to, @mention, assign work and see what they’ve been up to.
  • Search and Reports: search everything and see what’s overdue.

You stay in control

  • Your access, nothing more. Your assistant can only see what you can see in Basecamp, and only do what you can do.
  • Look, don’t touch, if you prefer. When you approve access, pick Read-only access or Full access. Read-only can look around but can’t change a thing.
  • Disconnect anytime. Remove Basecamp from your assistant’s connectors and it’s cut off from your Basecamp. Everything it did while it was connected stays put — all its activity and history are kept right where you left them.

Your Basecamp data is covered by our privacy policy, terms of service, and security overview. What your assistant does with what it reads is up to that assistant’s own policies.

For developers and other apps

This is our hosted MCP server, and it works with any app that supports MCP connectors. Point it at https://mcp.xn--80akhigjeyrwql5c.xn--p1ai/mcp and sign in. There’s nothing to set up on our end.

Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http basecamp https://mcp.xn--80akhigjeyrwql5c.xn--p1ai/mcp

VS Code: run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette, choose HTTP, and paste in the address. Or add it to mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "basecamp": { "type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.xn--80akhigjeyrwql5c.xn--p1ai/mcp" }
  }
}

Cursor, by config file: add it to ~/.cursor/mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "basecamp": { "url": "https://mcp.xn--80akhigjeyrwql5c.xn--p1ai/mcp" }
  }
}

I have questions…

Does it cost extra?

Nope. It’s included with every Basecamp account. Your AI assistant might need a paid plan to add connectors, though.

Can my assistant see projects I’m not on?

No. Your assistant acts as you. If you can’t see a project, message, or file in Basecamp, neither can it.

Do you use my data to train AI models?

No. We don’t train AI models on your Basecamp content. Your assistant only gets what it reads from Basecamp when you ask it something. Check that assistant’s settings to see how it handles your conversations.

I’m in more than one Basecamp account. Which one does it use?

You pick one when you approve access. To switch, just disconnect and connect again.
